This classic dystopian novel centres around Londoner Winston Smith, a frustrated and repressed man who works for the totalitarian government in Oceania in the Nineteen-Eighty-Four. Smith attempts to rebel against the oppression he feels in the society and as a result is eventually exposed as a traitor and his life is jeopardized. I enjoyed reading this novel, it's a classic as the themes do not wavier with time; what is the role of government in society and what is the true nature of history and reality. It is a book one could easily read twice over as the symbolism and richness of the text may not be fully appreciated on first reading as one is to busy getting accustomed to the strange new world the author is laying out in each chapter. All in all, a must read for those that like dystopian literature, interesting books and for those looking to understand what it means when someone uses the phrase "Big Brother is Watching" and the word "Orwellian" in a sentence.
